Hal Cazalet divides his time between the USA and Europe performing in opera, musical theatre and cabaret. After training at the Guildhall School of Musical and Drama in London, he went to the Juilliard Opera Centre, New York, where he won the Shoshanna Foundation Award.
As a keen advocate of new work, Hal has created many leading roles for world premiere operas; Nicholas in Tod Machover’s Pulitzer Prize nominated Death and the Powers (Monte Carlo Opera, Boston’s Majestic Theatre, Chicago Opera Theatre, The Dallas Opera – Live Simulcast), Gerard in Philip Glass’s Les Enfants Terribles (BAM Opera House, New York and US & European tours (recording on Nonesuch records), Charles The Music Programme (Polish National Opera and The Linbury Studio, ROH), Heracles Heracles (Weill Hall, Carnegie Hall). Other roles include; Richard Dauntless Ruddigore for Opera North (Grand Theatre Leeds, Barbican Theatre and UK Tour), Cascada The Merry Widow (ENO) Albert Albert Herring (Glyndebourne Touring Opera), Lysander A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Quint Turn Of The Screw, Orfeo in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, Belmonte Il Seraglio, Macheath The Beggars Opera (English Touring Opera) Fenton Merry Wives of Windsor (Buxton Festival), Macheath Threepenny Opera (Danny Kaye Playhouse, New York and Theatre Royal, Brighton), Prunier La Rondine (Opera Holland Park), Alfred Clement Let’s Make an Opera (Aldeburgh Festival), Tobias Tobias and the Angel (Young Vic/ETO).
In the USA, Hal made his Lincoln Centre debut performing L’Infnito by Tristan Keuris (World Premiere/WNYC live broadcast) and has performed at the Kennedy Centre, Washington DC under Christopher Hogwood and the NSO as Mr Angel in Mozart’s The Impresario. Hal has made tours of Europe, Japan, Canary Islands, with the Monteverdi Choir under Sir John Eliot Gardiner, with UK appearances at The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and the BBC Proms (recordings on Phillips and Deutche Grammophon labels).
During his many collaborations with American pianist Steven Blier, Hal has made numerous appearances with The New York Festival of Song (NYFOS), a concert series founded by Leonard Bernstein. He performed at the Library of Congress, DC with Sylvia McNair in The Land Where The Good Songs Go, a show based on the songs of P G Wodehouse and Kern. Further performances followed at The Danny Kaye Playhouse, New York and at The Wigmore Hall, London. The album The Land Where The Good Songs Go was released on Harbinger Records. Hal starred in Topsy Turvey at Weill Hall, Carnegie Hall and most recently in Rodgers, Rodgers and Guettel at The Kaufmann Centre, New York City. In Cabaret, Hal has performed with Tim Rice, Stephen Fry and Ned Sherrin and has made appearances on Radio 3 and BBC TV: A Portrait of Wodehouse, Loose Ends, In Tune, LBC Pete Murray Show and on WNYC radio in the USA in interview with Jamie Bernstein. As a visiting faculty, Hal has worked at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and at the Juilliard School, New York.
As a Composer & Lyricist, Hal’s musical First Night was presented at the Aspen Music Festival (Wheeler Opera House) and directed by Frank Corsaro at The Juilliard School. His choral piece Agnus Dei was performed at The Santa Fe music Festival and live on BBC Radio 3. He is currently writing a musical on Oscar Wilde’s fairytale The Happy Prince. His most recent appearance was performing the role of the Prince in The Happy Prince at The Lyric Theatre, Shaftesbury Ave in New Songs 4 New Shows, a west end Gala showcasing four new British Musicals.
