Tenor

Swiss-Canadian tenor Simon Gfeller first studied voice with Gail Desmarais in Montréal, Canada and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (London) under Adrian Thompson. He has also attended the Franz-Schubert Institut (Vienna).

Recent engagements include Ubaldo in Pia de’ Tolomei, Scythian Guard in Iphigénie en Tauride, 2nd Priest (and cover Tamino) Die Zauberflöte and Pete Peterson in Paul Bunyan for English Touring Opera, Lysander in Fairy Queen for Iford Arts Festival, Armed Man in Die Zauberflöte for Opéra de Montréal and Die Schumann Sonate in Zurich and Luzern. Simon recently made his Royal Opera House, Covent Garden debut singing 6th Servant in Strauss’ Capriccio under Sir Andrew Davis.

Other operatic credits include the title role of Glück’s Antigono, Ferrando Cosí fan Tutte, Alfred Die Fledermaus, St-Brioche Merry Widow, Ringmaster The Bartered Bride, Billy in John Estacio’s Lillian Alling, Pastore II Orfeo, El Remendado Carmen and Prince Paul La Grande Duchesse de Gérolstein for companies such as Ryedale festival, Baseless Fabric, Opera Project, Silent Opera, British Youth Opera, Opéra Bouffe du Québec and Ensemble Serse.

Very active on the concert platform, Simon regularly performs oratorios by Bach, Dubois, Handel, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Puccini & Orff. Notable credits also include Bernhardt’s Currite Pastores at St-Martin in the Fields and Weill’s Mahagonny-Songspiel for London Philharmonic Orchestra at Royal Festival Hall.

Performances in the 2018 include Mahler’s DAS LIED VON DER ERDE for English National Ballet at London Coliseum, Ferrando COSI FAN TUTTE for Baseless Fabric Theatre and Goro MADAMA BUTTERFLY for Iford Arts Festival. Further performances in the 2018/19 season include Mr Rushworth MANSFIELD PARK for Opera South.
