Matthew Sprange completed the Opera Course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2010, having taken MMus and MMP degrees at the school, studying with John Evans with whom he continues to have lessons. He began his vocal training with Wynford Evans whilst at Royal Holloway, University of London where he took BMus and MMus degrees (specialising in composition).
Operatic engagements have included Marcello LA BOHEME for Lyric Opera Productions Dublin, Vignette Productions & Charles Court Opera; title role MACBETH for Kentish Opera, Leporello DON GIOVANNI and title role LE NOZZE DI FIGARO for Diva Opera; title role DON GIOVANNI for HeadFirst Opera, Ford FALSTAFF and Marullo RIGOLETTO for Opera Project; Blasio in Salieri’s LA SCUOLA DE’ GELOSI for Bampton Classical Opera; for English Touring Opera Pietro SIMON BOCCANEGRA and covering Eustachio in Donizetti’s L’ASSEDIO DI CALAIS in 2013 and in 2014 he performed Cross Crosshaulsen in their Olivier Award winning production of PAUL BUNYAN and for Chelsea Opera Group, Jago in Verdi’s ERNANI. For Welsh National Opera he has covered the title role in LE NOZZE DI FIGARO and Guglielmo COSI FAN TUTTE; for Mid Wales Opera he performed Sid ALBERT HERRING and Yamadori MADAMA BUTTERFLY. He has also covered Germont Père LA TRAVIATA and title role MACBETH for the Iford Arts Festival, Minksman FLIGHT for Scottish Opera and Old Man / Vagrant in Stuart MacRae’s THE DEVIL INSIDE for Scottish Opera and Music Theatre Wales and Clerk 6, Father and 2nd Dandy THE NOSE for Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
Student roles included Schaunard LA BOHEME for British Youth Opera and Sid ALBERT HERRING; Eustachio L’ASSEDIO DI CALAIS; Mill in Rossini’s LA CAMBIALE DI MATRIMONIO and Le Baron in Massenet’s CHÉRUBIN at GSMD. Other engagements whilst studying included Commissario LA TRAVIATA and Le Chasseur GUILLAUME TELL for Chelsea Opera Group at the Queen Elizabeth Hall; the title role in LE NOZZE DI FIGARO for Opera Brava on a country-wide tour over the summer of 2009 and covering the roles of Mr. Gedge ALBERT HERRING and Minskman in Jonathan Dove’s FLIGHT for British Youth Opera in the summers of 2007 and 2008.
Oratorio engagements have included Handel’s Solomon at Eton College with Dame Emma Kirkby; Haydn’s CREATION in St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle as part of the Windsor Festival; Handel’s JUDAS MACCABEUS and MESSIAH; Mozart’s REQUIEM and SOLEMN VESPERS and Puccini’s MESSA DI GLORIA in venues including Worcester Cathedral, St. James’ Church, Piccadilly and the Farnham Maltings. He made his solo Barbican debut in a performance of Tippett’s FIVE NEGRO SPIRITUALS in a concert conducted by Bob Chilcott and featuring the BBC Singers.
On the recital platform, Matthew sang at the National Concert Hall, Dublin as part of the bicentenary celebrations for the Irish composer William Wallace; he gave two concerts at the Henley Festival in 2010 and performed Mahler’s LIEDER EINES FAHRENDEN GESELLEN at the City of London Festival in the same year. He has also given recitals at Christchurch Spitalfields and the Ryedale Festival, and the John Ireland Festival at Holy Trinity, Sloane Square. He won second prize in the inaugural Chelsea Schubert Festival Song Prize and whilst at GSMD, performed Barber’s DOVER BEACH at the Barbican Centre with the Idomeneo Quartet.
