Counter-tenor

Preston born Daniel Keating-Roberts was first introduced to music as a treble at Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral, under the direction of Professor Ian Tracey. From there he joined the London Oratory Schola whose film credits include Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter (Musical Director Mike McCarthy). Daniel then moved to Sheffield where he studied to masters level, and sang as a songman in several Northern cathedrals, including Liverpool, Sheffield and York Minster. He completed another Masters at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, with awards from the Foyle Foundation and the Countess of Munster Trust, studying with Andrew Watts, with whom he continues to study. He also won the 2009 Guildhall aria competition. In 2010, he became the first counter-tenor to be accepted onto the ENO Operaworks programme.

Daniel performs as a soloist internationally, both on the concert and opera platforms. He has worked with companies including Scottish Opera, Welsh National Opera, Mid Wales Opera, Garsington, New Chamber Opera, Iford and Tete-a-tete festivals, Oper Stuttgart, Nationale Reisopera, Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow and Opera de Baugé in roles including Unulfo in Handel’s RODELINDA, Athamus SEMELE, title role TAMERLANO Nireno GIULIO CESARE, Amore and Valetto L’INCORONAZIONE DI POPPEA, Ramiro LA FINTA GIARDINIERA, Ernesto IL MONDO DELLA LUNA, Military Governor A NIGHT AT THE CHINESE OPERA, Oberon A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, title role in Sergey Newski’s FRANZISKUS and performances of FIVE:15, title role in the world premiere of Richard Ayres’ PETER PAN, Dan, Potifar, Hormarschall, 3. Hellseher in Gion Antoni Derungs’ BENJAMIN, world premiere of Liam Patterson’s THE EIGHTH DOOR. Other roles include the title role in the world premiere of Tom James’s NIJINSKY’S EYE, (a role written especially for him), roles in BURIAL AT THEBES and I WANDER AS I WONDER by Dominique Le Gendre, Karen MacIver’s THE CABINET OF DR CAGLIARI, leading roles in touring productions of the baroque operas LA PURPURA DE LA ROSA and newly discovered ARMONYA DE LOS TRES MUNDOS with harpist Andrew Lawrence-King and New Boy in Pippa Harris’ BOLTED… for Sound Festival, Scotland. Daniel has also covered Medoro ORLANDO for Scottish Opera, Pisandro and Human Frailty IL RITORNO D’ULISSE, Helicon CALIGULA and Kelley/Bishop DR DEE for English National Opera and Melindo LA VERITA IN CIMENTO for Garsington Opera. He also performed Antinoo in Vinci’s IL MEDO and Harrison Birtwistle’s song cycle ORPHEUS ELEGIES with dancers from the Rambert in the old Commonwealth Institute and took part in a workshop for the National Theatre on a new Dominique Le Gendre Opera.
