Counter-tenor

Tom Verney began singing as a treble in Kingston Parish Church.  As a countertenor, he spent a year as a lay-clerk in Perth Cathedral, Western Australia, before taking up a Choral Scholarship at St. John’s College, Cambridge, and studying for a degree in philosophy. Having completed the Opera Course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, he now studies with Andrew Watts and Arwel Treharne Morgan. His studies are generously supported by the William Gibbs Educational Trust and he is an Independent Opera Fellow.

Tom Verney’s operatic engagements include roles in L’AMFIPARNASO (Vecchi) for Cambridge University; Athamas SEMELE for Hampstead Garden Opera; Testis 1 in Jonathan Miller’s production of Bach’s ST MATTHEW PASSION at the National Theatre; Oberon A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM for Shadwell Opera in Cambridge, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, for Guildhall Opera at the Barbican Theatre and most recently in a joint production with the Royal Scottish Conservatoire and Scottish Opera; Fox / Coachman THE ADVENTURE OF PINOCCHIO by Jonathan Dove and the title role in SAN GIOVANNI BATTISTA by Stradella, both for Guildhall Opera; title role THE LITTLE GREEN SWALLOW by Jonathan Dove for British Youth Opera; Corrado in Vivaldi’s GRISELDA for Opera Settecento at the Cadogan Hall; Voice of Apollo in Britten’s DEATH IN VENICE for Garsington Opera and Narciso in Handel’s AGRIPPINA for Iford Opera.   He has covered Military Governor A NIGHT AT THE CHINESE OPERA for British Youth Opera and Unulfo in Handel’s RODELINDA for Scottish Opera.

On the concert platform he has sung with the Dmitri Ensemble (and was a soloist on their recording of MacMillan’s SEVEN LAST WORDS FROM THE CROSS) and has appeared in concert with the Oxford Philomusica and the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican, with players from the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment Youth Scheme at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, as part of the Handel Festival at St. George’s Hanover Square, and at St. John’s Smith Square.  His repertoire includes: the Pergolesi STABAT MATER, MY BELOVED SPAKE (Purcell), CARMINA BURANA, Bach’s MAGNIFICAT, ST. JOHN PASSION and MASS IN B MINOR, MESSIAH, COME YE SONS OF ART, Hamor in JEPTHA, David in SAUL and Zelenka’s MAGNIFICAT IN C MAJOR.

Engagements in 2016 included Narciso in Handel’s Agrippina at the Theater an der Wien and covering Hamlet in The Firework Maker’s Daughter for Royal Opera at the Linbury Theatre. 2017 includes Cosroe ORMISDA for Opera Settecento, concerts for London Handel Festival and cover Unulfo RODELINDA for English National Opera.
