Biography
Soprano

British Australian soprano Samantha Crawford graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Distinction as a Baroness de Turckheim Scholar, under Yvonne Kenny AM. In 2017 Samantha was awarded the Golden Medal with Honours at the inaugural Berliner International Music Competition and the NSW Wagner Society Emerging Wagner Singer Award. In 2016 she won First Prize and the President’s Prize at the Wagner Society Singing Competition in London and was a Royal Philharmonic Society Chilcott Award finalist.

On the opera stage, Samantha made her debut in the role of Mrs. Coyle OWEN WINGRAVE to critical acclaim at the Aldeburgh Festival and Edinburgh Festival, under Mark Wigglesworth (dir. Neil Bartlett). Her other recent roles include the title role SUOR ANGELICA at Théâtre municipal de Fontainebleau, Sieglinde DIE WALKÜRE with Stuart Skelton in concert at St. Paul’s Knightsbridge, Blumenmädchen PARSIFAL for Teatro Real Madrid under Semyon Bychkov (dir. Claus Guth), Agathe DER FREISCHÜTZ for Blackheath Opera, Dido DIDO AND AENAES with the Brandenburg Sinfonia, Erste Dame DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE for Garsington Opera, Fiordiligi COSI FAN TUTTE cover for Scottish Opera, Miss Jessel THE TURN OF THE SCREW cover for Glyndebourne on Tour (dir. Jonathan Kent), and Donna Elvira DON GIOVANNI cover for Garsington Opera. Further roles performed include Contessa LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, Micaëla CARMEN, Rosalinde DIE FLEDERMAUS, Frau Fluth DIE LUSTIGEN WEIBER VON WINDSOR, Musetta LA BOHÈME and Popelka in Martinů’s COMEDY ON THE BRIDGE. Samantha is an alumna of the Britten-Pears, Wagner Bayreuth Stipendium and Garsington Alvarez Young Artist Programmes.

In concert, Samantha’s recent performances include Mendelssohn’s ELIJAH at Gloucester Cathedral (British Sinfonietta), Chausson’s POÈME DE L’AMOUR ET DE LA MER at Barbican Milton Court, Wagner’s WESENDONK LIEDER (City of London Festival), Dvořák’s STABAT MATER and Mendelssohn’s PAULUS at Christchurch Priory, Mozart’s REQUIEM at Colston Hall (New Bristol Sinfonia), Rossini’s PETITE MESSE SOLENNELLE under Stephen Cleobury (CUMS), and Berg’s SIEBEN FRÜHE LIEDER at St. Martin-in-the-fields. She has also sung a broad range of concert and recital repertoire for engagements at the Wigmore Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Barbican Hall under Martyn Brabbins, BBC NOW under Thierry Fischer, Wales Millennium Centre, LSO St. Luke’s, The Draper’s Hall with Sir Bryn Terfel, Schlosstheater Schönbrunn, Vienna and Cadogan Hall. Her performances have been broadcast on live cinema relay in Europe, on television and radio for the BBC and filmed for DVD release in 2017 (Sony).

Samantha is a recipient of numerous awards including; J:opera Gesangswettbewerb Sonderpreis Theater Kiel, Australian Music Foundation Award, The Mozart Singing Competition, The Countess of Munster Musical Trust, Help Musicians UK, The Tait Memorial Trust Julian Baring Award and The City of London Corporation.

Upcoming engagements include Verdi’s REQUIEM at the Medina Theatre, Madam Pauline Viradot in THE SALON MUSICAL, Strauss’ VIER LETZTE LIEDER and Wagner’s WESENDONK LIEDER at St George’s Hanover Square and Blackheath Halls and Vaughan Williams’ A SEA SYMPHONY with Westbourne Orchestra. She was recently selected as a semi-finalist for the Hong Kong International Operatic Singing Competition.
